This discussion is an extension of a conversation I had with the engineering team members at the retreat. The gist of the discussion was:
I don't think Friday demos are serving us well in their current format
I think waiting for feedback on a Friday slows us down considerably
I think we lose a lot between Friday afternoon (when we gather feedback) and Monday afternoon (when we plan our week's work)
I think we lose a lot of time when we try to incorporate everyone's feedback
My proposal was to give each project team the autonomy to gather feedback in a way that works best for the project from the people the team has identified as being able to provide an informed opinion. Consequently, I want us to trust that the team is using their knowledge and insight to define the best path for the project. At the same time, I proposed changing Friday Demos into an opportunity for the team to share, celebrate the progress that has been made, and talk broadly about what's next on the horizon.
These proposals are about detaching projects from a weekly cadence, enabling them to adapt to changes more quickly and giving the team complete authority to make decisions for the best of the project. It's about parallelising work in a way that allows us to balance productivity with inclusivity.
The conversation I had at the retreat was positive, and I think broadly the engineering team were happy to shift how we think about 'demo fridays'. If there's no big objection perhaps we can start later this week...
