See edx/edx-arch-experiments#82 and the discussion in the notes from https://discuss.openedx.org/t/deploying-open-edx-on-kubernetes-using-helm/8771/28 with @jmbowman

Research is ongoing explore how we can unify the current developer environments (e.g. Tutor vs. Devstack) and make them more consistent with how production deployments (will) work. There may be some implications for the development of this helm chart, so we should stay involved with the progress of that work and keep it in mind as both projects progress.

Note from the meeting - the next step is for @jmbowman and the others working on this to select the pieces (existing, or new) that will be used for the cloud-based development environment.

Relevant notes from Keith from the meeting:

  • Discovery has been completed, Coder, Devspace and Tilt.
  • Work is currently stuck with a rubric comparing those against each other.
  • Trying to decompose features that they want from dev environment, to which ones are just conventions.
  • What is linked to service orchestration, docker-compose or k8s, deploying. And how they would integrate with devstack and tutor.
  • Still working on it, haven’t had the time yet.

Update from 2U. Still in the works, but it has not progressed much from this point.
