I too have the same issue, running the same version but in Windows 10 x64. I can look at my address via https://etherscan.io/ and it shows me that there is (thankfully) still about $5000 worth of various token, but they no longer appear next to the ETH total like they used to.
If I am not mistaken, this was also the case when I ran the version I upgraded from which was 1.8.7
I will try going back to 1.8.7 first and see what's up, since it's supposedly now "stable".

Please, use v1.8.7-stable if you heavily rely on the Parity Wallet.

Please, use https://wallet.parity.io if you have issues with a local node.

Please, prepare any other alternatives you can think of to transact Ether/Tokens/Assets or want to interact with contracts. We will remove the wallet as you know it soon and discontinue to run the public nodes. Parity 1.10 will not come with a built-in wallet anymore, and versions after 1.11 and beyond will start shipping with a very minimal light-compatible wallet.

Meanwhile, you can report issues and discuss your experiences at the external repository for the wallet dApp here: https://github.com/Parity-JS/dapp-wallet

I have tried using 1.8.7 and it also fails to show erc-20 tokens.
I was not aware of the changes to parity and I don't know what else I can use to store my ETH and tokens reliably.
I know it is possible to import a .json file from Parity into myetherwallet.com so is that the possible solution?

Yes that would work!
