While working on PR #2190 I realized that it would be nice to have support for footnotes. A proof of concept was made - but to use the theme/template mechanism properly (without css hacks) a dedicated PR seems to be merited.

The placement in the poc is wrong - as the contribution link should be below the footnotes:

This enhancement depends on implementing enhancement #2215.
