I had a few conversations with folks where I had to explain the difference between popular Open Source projects governed by companies like Next.js or React, source-available projects like MongoDB or ElasticSearch, or run by volunteers and hosted by a foundation.

We should be writing a piece of documentation on the matter, because for most people there is no difference between any of them.

This is a great idea! I've been emphasising the advantages a foundation hosted OSS project has and folks really gravitated towards it. IMO this can be an impacting factor when teams decide on a technology for their projects.

How do we want to do it?

A page on our website? Or a md file in here, or maybe both?

+1 to this. Not only to mention, but It'd also be interesting to explain how our model (a cross-project council) works and maybe even a little guide of how other open source projects or business could inner source from this :=)

@mcollina and I have a working draft. @kyliewd is smoothing it out and then we will share with the CPC for input.
