Multilingual map

Is it possible to render different raster maps for users with different UI languages using tags 'name:<language_code>' and using tag 'name' (without suffix) as fallback?

While technically feasible, I don't think this will make it as a core competency within the OSM infrastructure. But I'm happy to point you to Wikimedia, which is working on multilingual maps for integration into Wikipedia.
