When you open the data layer it can make a large request to the API, which takes some time to complete. If you don't wait, and select a tiny area manually, it can return results immediately. However, when the original result eventually returns, it overrides the second one.

OpenCycleMap has some crappy ajax request sequenceid tracking when using the search box, and something similar could be done here.
