We want the XML files to be well-formed (syntactically correct) as well as valid. To make sure they are valid we want them to comply with our custom DTD or an XSD.

For some additional context: a custom DTD/XSD is needed because Android doesn't provide one, and it's a really structured way to validate that the correct tags & attributes are being used.
