Clear select back to placeholder?

I have a remote data select that has a blank <option value>Placeholder</option>. I am trying to re-initialize the select with:

      select.tomselect.clear()
      select.tomselect.clearOptions()
      select.tomselect.load('')

It works well except the placeholder is not selected - the select text is cleared and the element collapses. I can select a new option (even the placeholder). How can I have it reload the placeholder?
