Stacks Data WG: Intro Thread

👋 Introduction:

Hey people! A few contributors have been taking some time to learn more about various data-related needs within the ecosystem. We've learned that as we approach the Nakamoto and sBTC upgrades, there is a clear need for more discoverable data related to the network and the token. This brief will further break down the definition of 'data' in this context and audiences we have identified as being in need of new data resources.

🎯 Objective & Scope:

• To research and scope the data needs of key audiences in the Stacks Ecosystem
• Ensure key data and data-related services needed to enable post-Nakamoto and sBTC adoption are in place

More about the data we're talking about and the people it may serve:

The data

• 🌐 Data on technical network health & status (blocks, nodes, etc.)
• 🤑 Data related to the token (TVL, flows, etc.)
• ❤️ Data about the community (growth, capital, etc.)

The key audiences that need data:

• 1️⃣ Data for STX purchasers, holders, funds, institutions
• 2️⃣ Data for Degens (DeFi related, signer dashboards, etc.)
• 3️⃣ Data for Developers (Data prospective builders look at, as well as tools/services they need to display data in their own apps)
• 4️⃣ Data for Core Developers and Technology Contributors (Additional network data like nodes health, etc.)
• 5️⃣ Data for Community (open-ended currently)

📦 Deliverables:

• A dashboard or similar tool through which important data is provided to the community and other key audiences
• Potentially API-based services for builders to leverage data through
• Likely: A partnership with a top-end provider, such as Dune, Nansen, Messari, Glassnode, etc.

📅 Timeline

We intend to deliver a complete scope on the various and diverse needs by the end of October. Implementation should be well underway sometime in November, and final deliverables available in early 2024.

There have been initial conversations with promising possible providers, but the current priority is to more deeply scope the needs for each audience.

Nov 9, 2023 Update

• We're hosting customer interviews to scope the right data for different ecosystem stakeholders (engineers, miners, stx holders, developers) to produce a recommended list of first data requirements.
• We're in touch with a few potential data partners but not announcements at this time.

Dec 7, 2023 Update

• We've had discussions with a number of providers, both large established data providers and upstart teams building new software. We think a combination of providers will ensure quality and depth of data. We'll update when we have more finalized details.
• We're working to further scope the most urgent data needs to ensure any partner is able to deliver those in January or February.

Excited to share that we've broken ground with an awesome data partner thanks to @blocks8's work here. She's now handing off implementation to @ivoandov and is pulling in leads with specific needs around areas like Signing, mining, and more!

Agreed! We have one agreement signed with an expected launch date in February 2024 and a second partnership in the works. Both partners will be announced at launch and were surfaced through our community. @ivoandov is the point person going forward on these two partners.

Once these partners launch, we'll access if there are any remaining data needs that would require more data partners. We are open to speaking with other public data providers if they are interested in working with Stacks.

Updates from call 1/19/2024:

• Ortege is in the midst of integration and working to surface Stacking data for Messari
• SatScreener is pending paperwork to get started on their solution
• Stealth project we're in touch with has made two hires and have started to pull in a lot of the data that used to be on OnStacks
• Contractors from StatsonChain are helping the Stacks Foundation with speeding up the process to bring on these replacements
• Call last week with TokenTerminal to assess ROI and overall cost.
• Babo release some interesting stuff on Dune, Dune is still not feasible for full integration (https://dune.com/babo/stacks2)
• https://status.stacks.org was revived and will be further improved going forward
