If I select POIs along a route, and then turn the POIs off, they are still shown on map.

Follow these steps:

1. Select Menu > Configure map option.

2. Make sure that the POI overlay option is turned off.
   Now the map does not show any POIs.

3. Define any route.

4. Tap on the "indented flag" button
   

5. Turn on the POI slider.

6. Select one or more POI types.

7. Now the list of POIs is shown below the route.
   Also, the map displays all POIs (even POIs that are far away from the route).

8. Now turn off the POI slider. The POI list vanishes.
   But the map continues to show the POIs. [BUG]

The only way to turn off the POI display in maps is to repeat steps 1 and 2.
