I live in Europe, and faced the toll sign (with the "$" character") for the first time last week-end. To tell the truth, I thought at first it was a display bug (!), and then realized it was announcing a toll !

Maybe a more graphical sign (coins, banknotes or credit card) would be more realistic and universal ?

I think it need to be textual so it could be translatable and self-explainable.

In that case, the ISO 4217 currency designator could be used, depending on the country where the toll is located.
