Request: add pref to disable map rotation in navigation #7359
Comments
No, it's not. This one is about map rotation while the other one is about screen rotation (horizontal vs. vertical). |
Don't think this is autism ... :) Many people skilled in outdoor orientation always use the 'North is up' view under all circumstances - the most prominent reason is that that view at a glance delivers one more piece of information - your direction of motion in terms of N S E W :) Please understand that OsmAnd during a navigation simply changes to the corresponding profile you select when setting up the route (car, bicycle, pedestrian, etc.). So if you before the navigation have configured that profile to use 'North is up' it will also be like that during the navigation. Hence for e.g. car navigation, from normal map viewing mode simply change to the car profile once while there is no navigation active (via tapping the globe icon top left of the map screen), then in the car profile tap the compass button (below the profile button) repeatedly until you are at 'North is up'. If you know that OsmAnd during a navigation simply switches to the respective profile, this seems logical. But I guess it is not immediately obvious. :) If you want to be able to change that setting always on the fly, also during navigation, simply set the Compass button to be always visible under Menu / Configure screen / Compass (for the profile you will be using for you navigation !) |
Additionaly, It would be helpful to move the center of the map a little back so we can see more of what is ahead. See #7472. |
Did you have a look in the last option of configure screen ? |
i got badly lost in a foreign city last week because i didn't realise the map was rotating! a map in which north isn't "up" is a real struggle for me. When i figured out what was happening, and stopped going in circles, i looked for a preference and didn't find one. Please, make it easier to find than "go to a profile you are not using when you are not navigating and tap an unmarked icon five times and dance in barefoot over myrtle leaves arranged in a triangle". The leaves aren't always in season. Thanks! |
I find it very very frustrating that there is no way to disable the rotate with two fingers. I use fingers to zoom and move the map, and quite often i find the screen gets rotated by mistake which is disorientating at best. I simply want there to be no way of rotating the map with a gesture. North is always up for me. The same applies to 3d mode. I never want it and in sometimes appears by accident when zooming. This is especially true when using the device on the handlebars on a bike. Surely it must be possible to simply disable selected gestures in a profile. |
The last option of configure screen is "copy from another profile" - in what way is that relevant to disabling map rotation? Whatever option you set for compass, two finger rotation is always on and that is a big problem if you use two fingers for zooming, or inadvertantly touch a second finger when moving the map. |
Implemented in General Settings |
In v3.4.4 (and previous) on Android you can set a speed threshold to switch between 'driving direction' and 'North up'.
However, there is no way to stop rotation and fix 'North up'. (There is in static map view, but not during navigation.)
It may be that I have decades of using paper maps, which do not change orientation by themselves; or it might be my slight autism, but I find the rotating map distracting and disorentating, and would like to switch it off, forever.
