We need to set expectations appropriately for Outreachy applicants and interns. There are some common misconceptions about the amount of time Outreachy mentors have available for interns.
Here are some common misconceptions:
Mentors work for Outreachy
Mentors are working full-time on mentoring
Mentors work full-time on their open source community
For applicants, add a new section to the Applicant Guide: "Mentor Time Commitments". Document that:
Outreachy mentors are unpaid volunteers
Outreachy mentors typically volunteer 5 to 10 hours per week during the contribution period. These hours are split between applicants to their project.
Outreachy mentors are required to volunteer 5 hours per week during the internship period. This includes time spent communicating with interns, reviewing contributions, and any other mentoring activity.
Outreachy mentors are not paid staff of either Outreachy or Outreachy's fiscal sponsor (Software Freedom Conservancy)
Outreachy mentors usually volunteer their time to work on their community. Some mentors are paid to work on open source. However, it is more common for mentors to volunteer their time on evenings and weekends.
Outreachy mentors may post their "office hours" in their project description.
We'll need the same information in both the Applicant Guide and the Internship Guide. I would suggest making it an HTML snippet that can be included in both HTML templates.
