@jospoortvliet Can we make sure that this ends up prominently in a release blog post? With 8.1 all clients older than 1.7.0 will not be able to synchronize anymore. Can be configured using minimum.supported.desktop.version in config.php

@LukasReschke it's in the release notes https://doc.owncloud.org/server/8.1/admin_manual/release_notes.html but I agree it warrants a separate mention. Will be in the blog about upgrading to ownCloud 8.1, to be published the day after the release.

A small piece from the blog post:

Preparation

Before you upgrade, be sure to carefully read the ownCloud 8.1 release notes. It is very important to note, for example, that you cannot run ownCloud Server 8.1 on Microsoft Windows. And that ownCloud clients older than version 1.7 will (by default) not be able to connect to ownCloud 8.1 servers. Caching has now to be configured manually and encryption 2.0 brings some significant changes, including the inability to disable encryption once enabled. There are more important changes like these so give the release notes a good read.

Be sure that you have the base requirements for ownCloud 8.1:

A Linux or BSD server (Mac OS X is possible but less tested)
MySQL 5.5 + / MariaDB 10.x
PHP 5.4 +
Apache 2.4 +

Usually, newer versions mean better performance with ownCloud. This is especially true for PHP.
