Using Ubuntu Studio 14.04.5 LTS and Linux Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04-based):

When starting vidcutter and trying to open a file, it shows an unreadable file open dialog:

I sent you the full screenshot because the terminal messages regarding fonts might be helpful.

6.0.0 (AppImage) seems to cure this problem here.
