Need two versions, 1 equivalent to each of these:

Option 1, call it "staggered" or something?

for(i in bottom_seq) {
      x[1, bottom_seq] <- x[1, bottom_seq] + (1 - colsums(x[ , bottom_seq])
      x[n_x, top_seq] <- x[1, top_seq] + (1 - colsums(x[ , top_seq])
}

Option 2, call it "cumul" or something

x[1, ] <- x[1, ] + p<dist_fun>(smallest_size, ...)
x[n_x, ] <- x[n_x, ] + p<dist_fun>(largest_size,...)

Need both for Padrino unfortunately
