Pandas version checks

  • I have checked that this issue has not already been reported.

  • I have confirmed this bug exists on the latest version of pandas.

  • I have confirmed this bug exists on the main branch of pandas.

Reproducible Example

import pandas as pd

df = pd.DataFrame(
    {'a': [2, 1, 4, 5, 1, 5], 'b': [4, 3, 5, 5, 2, 1]}
)
df.plot(kind='box', xlabel='x', ylabel='y')
df.plot(kind='box', xlabel='x', ylabel='y', vert=False)
df.boxplot(xlabel='x', ylabel='y')

Issue Description

Results for the above snippet show that xlabel is ignored in both cases:

The final command raises an error:
