I've never seen the height and width ratio, why do you need that?

The height and width ratios are nice if you don't want a evenly spaced grid and you don't want to calculate a lot of fractions.
This is my full final monster to define my grid:

OMG what is this frankenstein monster... 😂 I am not sure to get what you trying to do but the point of using gridspec is to be be able to merge subplots (here the 4 top left subplots on a 3x3 grid should be merged into one if I understand correctly your figure)

If what you wanted was to get your top left subplot on a different grid, you can also just define a new grid with grid spec:

                       bottom = 0, left = 0, right = 1)
