It used to work in Alpha but not in Beta any more. I guess it's because of the port of the extension system to ESM.

JS ERROR: Extension system-monitor@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com: SyntaxError: import declarations may only appear at top level of a module @ resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/modalDialog.js:3:0

Fixing it doesn't look too bad, there is a yet to be merged migration guide.

Note that there is ongoing work on Gnome 45 compatibility in the system-monitor-next fork of this repo:
