DynWorker by Félix Saparelli

Web threading made easy

sandbox loading...

The above sandbox
is already set up with a worker that logs all non-command messages to the sandbox. Try:

worker.eval("$.send('Hello Worker');");

Creating

To create a worker, you first have to set the path to the
dynworker.js

file. By default it's
./dynworker.js
. Then simply call the constructor:

DynWorker.path("path/to/dynworker.js");
var worker = new DynWorker();

Receiving messages

To actually see what your worker is doing, you have to set up one or more receivers.
When the worker sends a message "up" (to the main thread), it can either be a command
or an arbitrary method. You get access to both, so you can debug easily, but you probably
only want to listen to the interesting ones.

worker.receive(function (e, data) {
// `e` is the raw event, mostly for debugging purposes
// `data` is the actual message
if (!data['DynWorkerAction']) {
// If `data` has the `DynWorkerAction` property set,
// it's a command. Discard it.
console.log(data);
}
});

Debugging

There's a shortcut which sets up a receiver that logs all messages to the console:

worker.log();

Injecting a function

To add logic to a worker, you can inject functions. These can be named or anonymous, but
their name will be ripped anyway and replaced by the one specified when calling
inject()
.
In-worker, they are stored and namespaced under
$.ns
(see example below for recursion).

// A rather inefficient implementation of Fibonnacci
worker.inject("fib", function(n) {
if (n<=0) return 0;
if (n==1) return 1;
return $.ns.fib(n-1) + $.ns.fib(n-2);
});

Running code

To run code in-worker from the main thread, you just have to call
worker.eval()
:

worker.eval("doSomething();");

Injected functions

You can easily run a function you've previously injected, optionally passing in arguments:

worker.run("fib", 35);

This is (more or less) equivalent to:

worker.eval("$.send($.ns['fib'](35));");

The return value of the function will be sent "up" to the main thread.

In-worker helpers

In the worker, a number of helpers are provided under the
$
namespace:

$.send("message"); // Send a message "up" to the main/parent thread
$.receive(function(e, data) {
// Similar to the worker.receive method, this
// helper receives messages from the main thread
});
// These are only used internally:
$.cmd(action, args...);
$.callback(index, arg_array);

DOM Storage

You can access the
localStorage
and
sessionStorage
objects
using an async API similar (but not identical) to the native one:

// Setters:
$.localStorage.setItem(key, data);
$.sessionStorage.removeItem(key);
$.localStorage.clear();
// Getters:
$.sessionStorage.getItem(key, function(val) {
// ...
});
$.localStorage.key(index, function(key) {
// ...
});

More info...

You can read the source and have a look at the current state of things on
GitHub, or fork the repo if
you want to hack around. A few features are in the works, at varying degrees
of completion:

Clone workers

Access (a subset of) the DOM asynchronously

Perform full XHR requests (incl. XML processing, etc)

Access indexedDB

Serialize and unserialize workers

Access WebSockets
