will this project have full game compatibility or has it been abandoned? It's a shame we haven't seen any updates in a long time, the ODEs on sale are shamefully expensive for what they do.

The project needs new devs who are capable and willing to spend the time required to bring it up to spec.
Given that, Picostation is capable to reach xStation level of compatibility.
The hardware is slightly weaker on the RAM, meaning slightly higher requirements with the SD card, but otherwise there are no problems.

Unfortunately I am not able to help but I hope there are some positive implications. Thanks for response!

If the project is still on development, what kind of knowledge (and hardware) is required to be a part of it?

Hey ho,
you'll want microcontroller dev stuff. The target micro is the Raspi RP2040. You'll want at least some familiarity with coding in C.
Then this is a hardware focused project. Bus signals need to be implemented correctly, debugged where they don't work right, etc.
The rest is research and implementation.
