I have a winxp iso that installs fine from optical media.

Target system is Dell latitude d830

Using rufus defaults I get the missing eula error

Enabling the rufus advanced bios option (second disk or first not sure, takes forever to remake the USB I wish I could just change this option on the created usb) I get missing hal.dll error.

Any ideas?

Default works on a Dell e2600 laptop. (not with me, borrowed out)

Please see here.
You should only use the advanced BIOS options if you have more than one HDD on the target machine. Is that the case?

Edit: Changing to SATA ATA mode in bios solved the problem! (Default options.) No "flash cache" for me, whatever that means?

No that's not the case, as I said, default options give a missing eula error.

And fwiw imo you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss XP.

  1. It's a rock solid os that runs absurdly fast on modern gear and will only get faster. It installs in 20 minutes thanks to your app on my 6500 laptop, and finishes booting in 20 seconds on said laptop. Also the licenses will only get cheaper. I have like 10 of them I bought from an IT friend who is also my webhost admin.
  2. As it is finally being retired its popularity in many circles will increase since no more paranoia about ms pushing broken updates to punish users for not buying the latest product, and all updates can be slipstreamed. Also it allows for "final" remixes of xp, and means that anything coded for xp now has a more stable base to build on. WYSIWYG. No more shifting sands.

"the first things an "XP-from-USB" installer application does, including Rufus, is to try to apply some kind of workaround to the XP installation process"

How many are there and which one does rufus use?

I read the driver issue, I still don't fully understand, but I'm going to attempt some of the things mentioned here:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3524/p/19459628/20157921.aspx

Specifically the driver installation, or seeing if I can "switch modes" in the bios somehow.

P.S. Rufus is easily the best tool of its kind on the Internet. The only thing better would be one of those grossly overpriced isosticks.

P.P.S. It's my birthday :) (As a rule in try to inform everyone on my birthday :P)

First of all, happy birthday! ;)

Second, great to hear you solve your issue, which apparently had nothing to do with Rufus.

As to dismissing XP, please be mindful that I spent about one month full time adding XP installtion support to Rufus, so I hope that counts as not being quick to dismiss XP.

But as I pointed out, Microsoft never designed XP to be installable from USB, so it's a major pain in the ass to get working, as you also found out. The EULA error can have many causes, some of them having little to do with the USB boot creation process.

Hehe thanks :)

And no, not rufus's fault. At this point all you could do is include information in the app, like when/if it detects the chosen iso is windows xp it pops up a FAQ type window containing the information you linked me. Embed the documentation :)

Thanks for your time and for making this thing, it's badly needed.

I'll see about embedding some documentation, but there are just too many other features I want to add before that, and my time is limited. I'll close this issue for now.
