88XXau module from rtl8812au_aircrack-ng #696
Comments
This driver sucks. You can try using the 9999 ebuilds but if it doesn't work it's upstream's problem. |
The 9999 ebuild compiles, but does not load with gentoo-sources-5.10.x kernel. Thanks for your quick response. 👍 |
The driver does not suck, but it does break with the latest and greatest kernel once in a while. All we can do is to restrict a kernel version, but it might start working with a next version again. So yeah, please report to upstream, provide more details. Write a more specific subject, and show what's expected and you got in your report too. Also, use pentoo kernel |
I opened an issue upstream. Thanks for providing ebuilds for gentoo guys enabling me using that hardware on my gentoo box. |
I suggested to provide more details, but you did not. "stopped working" is not something what developers can reproduce and fix. |
I just did not know what to provide more as there is not much to find in dmesg nor /var/log/messages. In the ladder I only see:
In gentoo forum someone posted a possible fix, in my opened thread but it is not the build error, I report as the 9999 ebuild compiles fine. The module just does not load uppon starting with 5.10.x kernel in contrary to 5.9.x and earlier kernels and even manually modprobing it shows up in lsmod but does not create the wifi adapter and does not bring up any wifi networking. In the mentioned thread I also posted two links of dmesg of working 5.9.8 kernel and of not working 5.10.5 kernel. I also added .config files and emerge --info now. |
I tried to compile your latest ebuild against gentoo-sources-5.10.12, but it failed. That's the build.log I got. I did make oldconfig && make prepare but the error is persisting. |
Use stable, not the latest please. |
Only 9999 ebuild compiles with kernel 5.10.x, but it does not work anymore with kernel >5.9.8. I opened an issue upstream as ZeroChaos suggested, but did not get any usefull feedback yet. I don't know, what additional information I could provide in order to help understand my problem and help fixing it. Here is the corresponding thread I opened in gentoo forum. Booting 5.10.xkernel, the 88XXau module does not show in lsmod. I can do modprobe 88XXau which returns no error and lsmod then lists the said module, but the wifi network just does not come up. /var/log/messages shows: kernel: 88XXau: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. So when seeing an updated version added 5 days ago, I thought maybe I should try this one and see where it gets. Thats why I reported here. |
The stable ebuilds works for me on 5.10.11 |
rtl8812au_aircrack-ng/rtl8812au_aircrack-ng-5.6.4.2_p20200118.ebuild compiled fine. Let me check if it also loads. |
If you can't keep up to date, please don't file bugs |
My usb wifi stopped working with recent gentoo-sources-5.10.x kernels. Last working version is gentoo-sources-5.9.8 with the ebuilds from your overlay. Is there a newer version of this driver, or am I supposed to use another package to get my usb working with recent >=gentoo-sources-5.10.x kernels?
Thanks for providing ebuilds that support my usb-wifi anyway, really appreciate :)
