Bandwidth limitation

Included in v1.10.0

By default the VRT NU add-on does not limit the bandwidth (Internet usage) and will favour the best quality stream available. However in some cases you may want to limit the bandwidth usage for a lower quality stream.

Setting a lower bandwidth for Kodi

You can limit the bandwidth for Kodi globally, this is done from the Kodi settings:

Settings » System » Internet access » Internet connection bandwidth limitation

BEWARE: Not all add-ons adhere to this global Kodi setting, however the VRT NU add-on does.

Setting a lower bandwidth for the add-on

If you only want to limit the bandwidth for the VRT NU stream, you can do this in the Add-on settings:

Settings - VRT NU » Playback » Maximum bandwidth (kbps)

Bandwidth vs stream quality

When you limit the bandwidth you will be affecting the quality of the stream. How bandwidth affects quality depends on the used stream format (codec and encoding options).

The below list was made by looking at a stream's manifest, your mileage may vary.

Bandwidth limit Format Quality Remark
256 kbps 234p 416x234
512 kbps 270p 480x270
1024 kbps 360p 640x360
1536 kbps 432p 768x432
2048 kbps 540p 960x540 Maximum for most VRT NU streams
3072 kbps 720p 1280x720 Only for Live TV streams, see HD quality
5120 kbps 1080p 1920x1080 VRT NU does not provide 1080p HD streams
