I spoke with the developer of Funkwhale to support audio from Funkwhale and other AP services. He still needs to do some work on his side before I can implement it, so I will be following this:

You won't be able to upload audio to PixelFed, but you will be able to follow Funkwhale users and PixelFed will show an audio player in the timeline. Video support is planned and it has audio, so this won't be a big change.

@rugk We are focused on Photo sharing, we believe Funkwhale is better suited to sharing audio.
