In 1998 Stan founded <a
href="http://emptystageimprov.com/">The Empty
Stage Theatre</a> in Los Angeles where he
created numerous improv groups and directed
over 1500 shows

<p>
Stan Wells began directing and teaching comedy
improvisation twenty-five years ago in Los
Angeles. He is a graduate of the University of
Washington’s Professional Actors training program
and appeared in numerous television and film
productions before discovering improvisational
comedy. He directed The Groundlings in the late
1980′s working with such TV notables as Kathy
Griffin and Julia Sweeney.

<p>
He helped to create and subsequently directed <a
href="http://trans4merz.com/">The Trans4merz</a>,
a group that is still performing in the LA area,
more than twenty years ago. Members of The
Trans4merz included: Lisa Kudrow (Friends, The
Comeback), Cynthia Stevenson, Emmy winning SNL
writer, Scott Wainio, Emmy winning writers, Jay
Kogen (Frasier, The Simpsons, Tracy Ullman Show)
John Stark, (Cheers, Ellen, According to Jim),
John Frink (The Simpsons) along with
writer/performers Harry Hannigan (According to
Jim), Ted Michaels, founder of The Crazy Uncle Joe
Show at The Groundlings theater, Mike Castagnola
who appeared in numerous film roles and counts
former Groundlings Sunday Company pal Conan
O’Brien as a good friend. Conan performed with The
Trans4merz on several occasions as did
comedian/actors Jon Lovitz and Rik Overton.

Members of the hit online shows <a
href="http://watchtheguild.com/">The Guild</a> and
<a
href="http://effinfunny.com/legend-of-neil">Legend
of Neil</a>, Felicia Day, Sandeep Parikh, Jeff
Lewis, Alex Albrecht and Mike Rose met taking
classes at The Empty Stage and went on to perform
with, Being Humans, POP! and <a
href="http://waterbrainsimprov.com/">The
Waterbrains</a>. They are continuing to perform
live improv in the LA area and around the country
as Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em, a show based on the
clap-in technique taught to them by director Stan
Wells.

<p>
Actress/comedienne Kristin Wiig (SNL) performed
for several years at The Empty Stage with <a
href="http://waterbrainsimprov.com/">The
Waterbrains</a> and The Perks.
</p>
<p>
The Empty Stage closed its doors in 2008 and
Stan moved back to his hometown to teach a whole
new group of students. In the last three years
he has taught improv for the third year actors
at the University of Washington’s PATP program,
founded a NW version of Being Humans and
recently closed a successful six month run of
The Fortune Room, an improvised lounge show at
The Little Red Bistro in Seattle.
