Users frequently ask about how to manage special issues in OJS and it would be great to have a specific way to do this. Currently the workaround is to create a new section for a special issue or create a new journal for the special issue. Both are not ideal and create challenges. More discussion is available in these forum posts:

Special issues management functionality would include the following (and please add other things):

  • When an author makes a new submission, they can select whether it’s part of a special issue
  • When viewing and filtering active submissions, editors can identify which submissions are part of special issues
  • A submissions can be both part of a special issue and assigned to a journal section

Perhaps the Categories feature could be extended for this? Or this Github issue looks related: #4415

Special issues should be able to identify that issue's editors and provide this information to depositing services where appropriate (DC, OAI, DOI, coins, doaj, etc.). See request on forum.

For anyone coming to this issue, it's implemented to a great extent.
You can go to Settings->Journal-> Sections
The author will select the issue at the start of submission.
The editor can filter using these sections.
You can specify the issue's editors and section policy.
