This is an attempt to rewrite Bosh's stemcell_builder shell scripts into chef cookbooks.
You can quickly create a Chef cookbook for a new stage using the following commands:
$ thor :cookbook new_stage_name
$ thor :cookbook bosh_new_stage_name
The above two commands are equivalent.
You can then develop the new cookbook, and run tests upon it:
$ cd cookbooks/bosh_new_stage_name
$ bundle
$ kitchen test
The last command will boot a dedicated VM via Vagrant, run the empty cookbooks (recipes/default.rb) and test with the empty test file (test/integration/default/bash/bosh_new_stage_name_test.sh).
It leaves the Vagrant VM running.
You can now iterate on the tests and on the cookbooks. You can do test-driven development of your new cookbook.
# run the cookbooks
$ kitchen converge
# run the tests
$ kitchen verify
# throw the VM away
$ kitchen destroy
