I think sjl's tmux theme looks great and could be a nice base for an improved tmux theme. The tmux theme should also support cropping of segments.

Cropping of segments could be difficult, it seems that tmux runs the status script outside the terminal emulator so it's impossible to get the correct terminal dimensions from the status script (none of these solutions work).
