Improving the practice of scholarship is a common goal of the open science, open source, and {FAIR} (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) communities and research software is now being understood as a type of digital object to which {FAIR} should be applied. This emergence reflects a maturation of the research community to better understand the crucial role of {FAIR} research software in maximising research value. The {FAIR} for Research Software ({FAIR}4RS) Working Group has adapted the {FAIR} Guiding Principles to create the {FAIR} Principles for Research Software ({FAIR}4RS Principles). The contents and context of the {FAIR}4RS Principles are summarised here to provide the basis for discussion of their adoption. Examples of implementation by organisations are provided to share information on how to maximise the value of research outputs, and to encourage others to amplify the importance and impact of this work.},

abstract = {Die Versionskontrollsoftware git und die Serversoftware {GitLab} wurden für die Softwareentwicklung konzipiert, ermöglichen aber auch kooperatives Arbeiten an Forschungsdaten entlang der {FAIR}-Prinzipien, beides elementare Herausforderungen im Forschungsdatenmanagement ({FDM}). Koordiniert durch die Landesinitiative fdm.nrw wurden in den vergangenen Jahren daher Abläufe und Schulungen zum {FDM} mit git und {GitLab} erprobt und durchgeführt.
Eine Hürde bei der Verwendung von git und {GitLab} im {FDM} kann die Anwendung der zugrundeliegenden Software mittels Kommandozeilenbefehlen darstellen. Zwar wird das Verständnis der Versionierungsvorgänge erhöht, einige Forschende bevorzugen aber die intuitiven graphischen Interfaces. In jedem Fall ist für die Adaption Einarbeitungszeit einzuplanen. Für datengetriebene Forschung werden Versionsverwaltung und andere Digitalkompetenzen mittelfristig einen ebenso hohen Stellenwert wie das „wissenschaftliche Schreiben“ im Bereich der Sprachkompetenzen einnehmen müssen.
Es gilt daher zunächst ein grundlegendes Verständnis für git und die Möglichkeiten zur Nutzung im {FDM} darzustellen. Ergänzend zu etablierten Schulungen wurden kurze, konkrete Beispiele in einer Best Practice Sammlung zusammengetragen: öffentliche {GitLab}-Projekte realisieren und dokumentieren einzelne Anwendungsfälle mit Hilfe der gebotenen Werkzeuge. Dadurch soll die Anwendungs- und Digitalkompetenz der Forschenden, aber auch der Infrastrukturmitarbeitenden und der Schulenden gesteigert werden und so git und {GitLab} zu einer besseren Umsetzung des {FDM} beitragen.},

abstract = {Forschungssoftware ist ein integraler Bestandteil der Wissenschaft und kein Nebenprodukt mehr. Je nach Disziplin wird dem Code immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Die fachinterne Anerkennung von Software wird für Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler immer wichtiger. Gleichzeitig entwickelt sich Forschungssoftware zu einem eigenständigen Publikationsgenre neben Text- und Datenpublikationen. Allerdings ist der professionelle Umgang mit Softwareprojekten in der Wissenschaft noch nicht überall gelebte Praxis. Dabei bietet ein expliziter Umgang mit Forschungssoftware erhöhten Nutzen im wissenschaftlichen Alltag und darüber hinaus. Ein Software-Management-Plan als Organisations-Werkzeug besitzt hierfür großes Potenzial. Der Beitrag diskutiert diese aktuellen Entwicklungen und zeigt zugleich mögliche Lösungswege auf.},

abstract = {To satisfy the principles of {FAIR} software, software sustainability and software citation, research software must be formally published. Publication repositories make this possible and provide published software versions with unique and persistent identifiers. However, software publication is still a tedious, mostly manual process. To streamline software publication, {HERMES}, a project funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration, develops automated workflows to publish research software with rich metadata. The tooling developed by the project utilizes continuous integration solutions to retrieve, collate, and process existing metadata in source repositories, and publish them on publication repositories, including checks against existing metadata requirements. To accompany the tooling and enable researchers to easily reuse it, the project also provides comprehensive documentation and templates for widely used {CI} solutions. In this paper, we outline the concept for these workflows, and describe how our solution advance the state of the art in research software publication.},

abstract = {Collecting, integrating and storing input of research information from a variety of
heterogeneous data sources and different independent information systems into the
research information system ({RIS}) can result in various data errors and abnormalities,
which, on the one hand, can have a different negative impact on the quality of the data
and, on the other hand, lead to erroneous research reporting. To be able to recognize
errors at an early stage and treat them efficiently, {RIS}-using higher education and
non-university research institutions in Germany and various European countries should
consider data quality management as a holistic and continuous improvement process in
order to provide an adequate and reliable basis for decision-making in an {RIS} and to
increase the confidence in the available data. Against this background, the dissertation
aims to comprehensively examine the data quality of {RIS} and its impact on user
acceptance, as well as to present the techniques, methods and measures of data quality
management that are applicable to research information in order to provide institutions
with the ability to detect, correct and improve on missing, incorrect and inconsistent
data. Thereby this dissertation focuses on a case study of the data quality problems
that appear in Web of Science publication data, and for this purpose a concept and
framework for monitoring and improving data quality is being developed in order to
increase the acceptance of the {RIS}. The results of the dissertation are validated in
different case studies in the German and international research context.},

Im vorliegenden Beitrag stellt die 2018 ins Leben gerufene Kommission für forschungsnahe Dienste des {VDB} den aktuellen Stand in diesem Bereich dar und geht auf Voraussetzungen und Rahmenbedingungen für die Entwicklung eines entsprechenden Serviceportfolios ein. Dabei sieht die Kommission ein Umdenken hinsichtlich des Selbstverständnisses und des Dienstleistungsangebots von Bibliotheken als unumgänglich an. Erforderlich sind eine systematische Entwicklung von Serviceportfolios, eine verstärkte Bereitschaft zu projektbezogenem Arbeiten, eine strukturierte Organisations- und Personalentwicklung sowie eine umsichtige Abstimmung mit anderen Anbietern von forschungsunterstützenden Dienstleistungen, um ein für die Nutzenden in sich stimmiges und nachhaltiges Serviceangebot im Bereich forschungsnaher Dienste zu schaffen.},

abstract = {Software is a critical part of modern research and yet there is little support across the scholarly ecosystem for its acknowledgement and citation. Inspired by the activities of the {FORCE}11 working group focused on data citation, this document summarizes the recommendations of the {FORCE}11 Software Citation Working Group and its activities between June 2015 and April 2016. Based on a review of existing community practices, the goal of the working group was to produce a consolidated set of citation principles that may encourage broad adoption of a consistent policy for software citation across disciplines and venues. Our work is presented here as a set of software citation principles, a discussion of the motivations for developing the principles, reviews of existing community practice, and a discussion of the requirements these principles would place upon different stakeholders. Working examples and possible technical solutions for how these principles can be implemented will be discussed in a separate paper.},

abstract = {{NFDI} consortia have a variety of disparate and distributed information infrastructures, many of which are as yet only loosely or poorly connected. A major goal is to create a Research Data Commons ({RDC}) . The {RDC} concept1 includes, for example, shared cloud services, an application layer with access to high-performance computing ({HPC}), collaborative workspaces, terminology services, and a common authentication and authorization infrastructure ({AAI}). The necessary interoperability of services requires, in particular, agreement on protocols and standards, the specification of workflows and interfaces, and the definition of long-term sustainable responsibilities for overarching services and deliverables. Infrastructure components are often well-tested in {NFDI} on a domain-specific basis, but are quite heterogeneous and diverse between domains. {LTA} for digital resources has been a recurring problem for well over 30 years and has not been conclusively solved to date, getting urgency with the exponential growth of research data, whether it involves demands from funders - the {DFG} requires 10 years of retention - or digital artifacts that must be preserved indefinitely as digital cultural heritage. Against this background, the integration of the {LTA} into the {RDC} of the {NFDI} is an urgent desideratum in order to be able to guarantee the permanent usability of research data. A distinction must be2 made between the archiving of the digital objects as bitstreams (this can be numeric or textual data or complex objects such as models), which represents a first step towards long-term usability, and the archiving of the semantic and software-technical context of the digital original objects, which entails far more effort. Beyond the technical embedding of the {LTA} in the system environment of a multi-cloud-based infrastructure, a number of technically differentiated requirements of the {NFDI}'s subject consortia are part of the development of a basic service for the {LTA} and for the re-use of research data.3 The need for funding for the development of a basic {LTA} service for the {NFDI} consortia results primarily from the additional costs associated with the technical and organizational development of a cross-{NFDI}, decentralized network structure for {LTA} and the sustainable subsequent use of research data. It is imperative that the technical actors are able to act within the network as a technology-oriented community, and that they can provide their own services as part of the support for also within a federated infrastructure. The working group "Long Term Archiving" ({LTA}) is to develop the requirements of the technical consortia for {LTA} and, on this basis, strategic approaches for the implementation of a basic service {LTA}. The working group consists of members of various {NFDI} consortia covering the humanities, natural science and engineering disciplines and experts from a variety of pertinent infrastructures with strong overall connections to the nestor long-term archiving competence network. The close linkage of {NFDI} consortia with experienced4 partners in the field of {LTA} ensures that a) the relevant technical state-of-the-art is present in the group and b) the knowledge of data producers about contexts of origin and data users interact directly. This composition enables the team to take an overarching view that spans the requirements of the disciplines and consortia, also takes into account interdisciplinary needs, and at the same time brings in the existing know-how in the infrastructure sector.},

abstract = {Das {DINI}-Zertifikat für Open-Access-Publikationsdinste ebnet den Weg für eine offene Wissenschaftskommunikation durch die freie Bereitstellung wissenschaftlicher Materialien als wesentlicher Baustein zukunftsorientierter forschungsnaher Dienste.
Das {DINI}-Zertifikat gibt es bereits seit 2004; es wird von der {DINI}-{AG} E-Pub angeboten. Das Zertifikat besteht aus einem Katalog von Kriterien, die für Einrichtung und Betrieb eines entsprechenden Open-Access-Publikationsdienstes zu berücksichtigen sind. Für die zertifizierten Einrichtungen bietet es damit quasi eine Garantie, dass der eigene Service den Anforderungen offener Wissenschaft gerecht wird und bleibt. Die {DINI}-{AG} E-Pub erarbeitet alle drei Jahre einen angepassten Kriterienkatalog, der auf den aktuellen Stand der technischen und redaktionellen Anforderungen eingeht. Technische Austauschprotokolle, Standards der Wissensbeschreibung und rechtliche Anforderungen an Services entwickeln sich stetig weiter und erfordern eine regelmäßige Anpassung des Zertifikatstexts. Seit den letzten Versionen wird in einem Request-for-Comments-Verfahren zudem das Feedback der interessierten Fachgemeinschaft eingeholt und bei der Überarbeitung berücksichtigt, so dass das Zertifikat zum Standard für entsprechende Publikationsdienste geworden ist.
Nach Abschluss der Arbeiten an der aktuellen Zertifikatsversion werden neue Entwicklungen in den Blick genommen, die für die kommende 2025er-Version als bedeutsam erachtet werden. So werden bereits weitere Schritte der Internationalisierung angedacht, etwa durch Vernetzung mit europäischen Projekten, die ebenfalls an internationalen Standards für Open-Access-Publikationsdiensten wirken.},

Die Nutzung eines {ELN} geht mit einer Reihe von Vorteilen einher:Forschungsdaten werden langfristig nachvollziehbar beschrieben und gemeinsam mit ihrer Dokumentation abgelegt, Medienbrüche bei digital erhobenen Forschungsdaten werden minimiert, die Verlustsicherheit (bspw. durch einen Brand) wird erhöht und das Teilen der Forschungsdaten sowie der Dokumentation wird erleichtert. Die Einführung und der dauerhafte Betrieb eines {ELN} in einer Arbeitsgruppe oder an einer Forschungseinrichtung gehen jedoch mit zahlreichen Herausforderungen einher. Als zentraler Dienst werden {ELN} oftmals von den Infrastruktureinrichtungen, also den Rechenzentren und Bibliotheken, für ihre Forschenden bereitgestellt. Dabei bietet sich eine enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen diesen Einrichtungen an, um Forschenden die reibungslose Nutzung eines {ELN} zu ermöglichen. Der vorliegende Artikel fasst die Ergebnisse des 6. Workshops der {AG} {ELB} vom 31.01.2022, organisiert von der Landesinitiative für Forschungsdatenmanagement – fdm.nrw, zusammen und präsentiert die Erfahrungen und Empfehlungen der Workshop-Teilnehmenden, die bei Einführung und dauerhaftem Betrieb eines {ELN} berücksichtigt werden sollten. Behandelt werden die Themen technische Umsetzung, Sensibilisierung und Information der Forschenden, Onboarding und Schulungskonzepte und begleitende Servicekonzepte. Die Autor:innen verfügen über Expertise und haben einen breiten Erfahrungsschatz zusammengestellt, um diesen anderen Institutionen und Personen, die vor einer solchen Einführung stehen, zur Verfügung zu stellen.},

abstract = {Am 8. Dezember 2019 wurde die Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen ({JLU}) Opfer eines schwerwiegenden {IT}-Sicherheitsvorfalls, der von externen Angreifern verursacht worden war. Eine durchgeführte Ex-post-Analyse hat ergeben, dass die {JLU} durch die seinerzeit neuartige Ransomware Ryuk kompromittiert worden war. Der Angriff war der bis dahin größte auf eine Einrichtung der öffentlichen Hand, der bekannt geworden war. Für die rund 28 000 Studierenden und 5 500 Beschäftigten der Universität waren die folgenden Wochen durch ein Notfallmanagement gekennzeichnet. Durch rasches und konsequentes Handeln und durch eine Reihe konzertierter Maßnahmen konnte der Schaden in Grenzen gehalten werden. Eine neue {IT}-Governance- und Sicherheitsarchitektur, die im Dialog mit externen Gutachtern und Beratungsfirmen entwickelt wurde, soll zukünftig auch vor Angriffen besser schützen. Die Cyber-Attacke hat in vielen Hinsichten auch gezeigt, dass alle Mitarbeitenden in den Sicherheitsprozess einbezogen werden und Verantwortung tragen müssen, die Sicherheit einer Universität aktiv mitzugestalten.},

abstract = {Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung und dem Austausch von bibliographischen Datensätzen zum Ausbau digitaler Bibliotheken wächst auch die Vielfalt an Aufgaben von Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekaren. In digitalen Bibliotheken wird nicht nur klassisches Bibliotheksgut nachgewiesen, sondern auch elektronische Dokumente, Digitalisate, Internetquellen und Forschungsdaten, etc. Deshalb existiert in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken - neben dem klassischen {OPAC} - heute eine Vielfalt an Systemen, die spezielle Aufgaben erfüllen (z.B. Portale, Repositorien). Zudem werden Daten nicht mehr nur im eigenen Haus produziert, sondern stammen zunehmend aus Datenbanksystemen Dritter. Für nahezu jede Art von Bibliotheksgut wurden für Austausch und Speicherung eigene Metadatenstandards entwickelt, die an die Eigenheiten des Objekts angepasst sind. Beispielsweise werden für Internetquellen andere Merkmale gespeichert als für gedruckte Bücher. Was tun, wenn diese verschiedenen Objekte in einer Datenbank nachgewiesen werden sollen? Wie entwickelt man für neue Systeme angepasste Metadatenschemas, die einerseits gängigen Standards folgen und gleichzeitig an spezielles Bibliotheksgut angepasst sind? Solche in den letzten Jahren ständig angewachsenen Aufgaben erfordern eine Spezialisierung im bibliothekarischen Beruf: der/die Metadaten-Bibliothekar/in. In diesem Beitrag werden wir die Aufgaben des „Metadaten-Managements“ in der {ZBW} vorstellen. Dargestellt werden die erforderlichen Kompetenzen sowie die Einbettung der Spezialistinnen innerhalb und außerhalb der Institution. Um unsere Erfahrungen mit generellen Entwicklungen in der deutschen Bibliothekslandschaft abzugleichen, befassen wir uns zudem mit der Frage, inwieweit sich diese Spezialisierung schon in der Ausbildung, in Stellenausschreibungen und in Berufsbezeichnung und -bild niederschlägt. Darüber hinaus blicken wir über den deutschen Tellerrand und ziehen einen Vergleich mit dem angloamerikanischen Raum.},
