Vet the performance impact of the HistogramAppender.Recode method and optimize code if needed (see TODOs in the code).

By now, people do profile-driven optimization based on real-world usage pattern. This particular issue hasn't shown up yet, but others have. I don't want to create the impression that this issue here is "known impactful", so I'll close it (but I'll leave the TODO in place).
