Some bibliography styles make titles lower case. To preserve capital letters, curly brackets are needed.

I am not sure how pubs handles it, but it frequently happens that pubs removes the brackets after editing?

That's problematic indeed. Could you provide an example of the problem?

I have a publication in my repository, Pub_2020, with the title something like

title = {... {GHz} ...},

When I edit the entry with pubs edit Pub_2020, pubs removes the curly brackets:

title = {... GHz ...},

and saves this when exiting the editor. Now the annoying part starts, where I have to put the brackets around GHz manually again. This is then saved properly. When I do pubs edit Pub_2020 now again, pubs does not remove the brackets. I am not able to reliably reproduce the issue. But it happens consistently.

So somehow at some point, pubs checks for curly brackets when opening the bib file with pubs edit and removes them. But not every time. IMO pubs should not mess with curly brackets in the title at all? When you add a publication via its DOI, pubs receives the bib file properly with curly brackets (if defined), but it might remove them at some point.

I can reproduce it. Interestingly, this happens when editing, not adding. I will get to the bottom of this.

This also happens with \. If there is for example a % you need to escape it, otherwise LaTeX throws an error.

Sometimes pubs removes \ when doing a pubs export. Sometimes not, together with the curly brackets. I can't understand when this happens or not, or what logic it follows. But I constantly have to re-edit the entries. I'm using biblatex right now, so I'm not too concerned about the brackets. but the \% is kind of annoying.
