This thread is for general issues regarding the Pd documentation in General. Earlier discussion is in https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/issues/1320 - The documentation includes 'Pd Manual', 'Help Patches', and other thingies .

proposals:

  • We can have a new 'Welcome to Pd' as a quickstart. This has been proposed here https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/issues/1328 (a thread to discuss the issues with the 'manual' itself).
  • Adding a tutorial for newcomers kinda like the FLOSS Manuals.

More to follow on the next comments.

ABOUT FLOSS MANUALS!!!

I know 'Floss Manuals' is not part of Pd documentation or Manual, but... Pd references to it in "Pd Documentation". And the Floss Manuals is very very outdated and actually tells you how to instal Pd Extended 0.39!!! People still find it and use it though. What to do then?

I think we can remove the reference to the Floss Manuals until someone updates it or something... otherwise let's mark it as 'outdated' in puredata.info and in on itself if possible. - done by me!

If people still like it as it has a nice tutorial for beginners, I'd like to base a new tutorial on it and ship it as part of Vanilla. So we can incorporate what people think it's nice about the Floss manuals into the Pd Manual itself and create a new quick, easy and simple new tutorial for newbies as part of Pd itself without referencing it to FLOSS.

This could be what we've been describing as a new section called "Welcome to Pd" as we've been discussing

So, what about the 7.stuff part of the documentation? Who made these? Can we include more stuff? Can we delete it? Can we revise it? Relocate it?

They seem to include stuff that could be part of a quickstart tutorial as I'm proposing. So maybe we can revise it and incorporate it there.

About 2.control examples. We could update it too...

It seems its purpose is actually a "Pd Quickstart", but only for control, and, well, actually it was inspired by Chris Dobrian's Max tutorial patches, which I think were truly just MAX (no 'MSP'/audio).

Maybe we can change this to a 'Pd Quickstart', more focused on the control data but also presenting very very basic audio stuff too...

Regarding a "Pd Quickstart" manual, I have one at https://github.com/porres/Live-Electronics-Tutorial/tree/master/Examples/Part.01-The.Basics/01-Pd.Quickstart

I could gladly incorporate it as part of a tutorial inside vanilla, but I don't want it to overlap with 2.control examples. So, what to do?

My suggestion is that in the update/overhaul of 02/control examples, we can have this thing called 'Pd Quickstart' and maintain what's in 02/control but also include some other things...

hmmmm, what do you think? I get there might be some resistance in messing with this, so let me know...
