��� in output

I can see this ��� strange symbols when travis is running tests for example here (it's not just in one place). but this is not happening in my terminal (I'm using osx). not sure what reason could be.

@felixSchl you mentioned before we should get #50 out of the way first here #46 (comment), do you know what could have been an issue for this strange chars?

if not, I haven't noticed it for a while so we can close this and reopen if it pops up again.

Is this only observed in TravisCI?
