When I try to open a previously saved mapset, I get an error message:
Cannot open the mapset. Mapset is already in use.

so I cannot use any of my mapsets

Did you experience a crash? I that case you might have a spurious .gislock file in your mapset. Delete it and you're good to go again.

Thank you Jef - this was the problem (I didn't close the mapset before exiting the program - that causes QGIS to crash)

now it works fine
