over time there have been several reports about problematic CRS recognition, for exemple #21859 and #22569

it seems that supporting a mechanism like http://prj2epsg.org/search would improve such cases.

This is proj's responsibility, as we rely entirely on it for CRS identification from proj/WKT strings. If there's an unrecognised CRS in QGIS running under proj 6, it needs fixing upstream.
