Original Redmine Issue: 17922

Redmine category:labelling

Data defined labels allows to manually place any label by moving it with a mouse click & drag. But the new defined position is stored as raw coordinates so it makes sense only for the current scale. By storing the new position as an offset in paper like units (mm, inches, pixel ...) then it would allow to maintain the defined position at any scale while having the ability to move the label by click & drag.

hi @domlysz
Isn't it what quadrants positionning is made for?

I experimented around your idea to evaluate if this would be effective using labeling expressions.

If we use fixed distance on screen, and zoom out, it just leads to having the label going far away from its parent feature:
offset_datadefined_label1

Converting this offset in map units instead of screen units, well just goes back to fixed XY .

I not sure if we can do so much better now. If you datadefined label position AND multiple map scales, you need to write very advanced label position expressions I'm afraid. Did I miss something?
