I find that turning on "Show Feature Count" for all my Layers often saves me from doing stupid stuff with the wrong layer. I don't see any penalty for having it on by default, as a setting for all QGIS projects. But I can imagine someone wanting to control it per project... I'd even be delighted if there was a Count All button in the Layers pane header alongside Expand All and Collapse All... Please?
