Opening vector layer properties dialog takes a long time

Describe the bug

Double clicking on a vector layer (geopackage layer or shapefile) to open the Layer Properties dialog: it can take minutes for the dialog to open.

How to Reproduce

1. Open a vector layer (e.g., the shapefile grassland from the qgis_sample data)
2. Double click the layer in the layers window (or select properties in the context menu)
3. Wait for the properties window to open
4. See error -->

QGIS and OS versions
QGIS 3.14.0-1 on Windows 10, installed via OSGeo4W installer (but same problem with previous version 3.12.3-1)

Additional context

• In QGIS 3.14.0 on Ubuntu 18.04 I do not experience this problem
• Opening the raster layer properties windows gives no problem
• Trying to force close QGIS freezes it, and even trying to end the process in the Window task manager takes a long time.

Possibly, but with the difference that in my case this is about very simple vector layers. It even happens when I open a new project, create a new layer with one simple polygon, and then try to open the properties panel.

@ecodiv does it happen with any layer? Have you tried a new QGIS profile (no 3rd party plugins installed after creating it)?

Hm - I have the impression that we have a different issue here.

@ecodiv - how many layers and how many categories/rules do you have approx. in your project?

In #34942 we are discussing really large combinations of layers/symbol layers and it is about seconds, not minutes.

I fear this might be something else here.

Do you have a project to share for reproducing the issue?

Dear all, thanks for the feedback. As it turns out, it had nothing to do with the layers. Our IT department has configured my computer in such a way that when installing QGIS, the 'start in' location of the shortcut created (in the menu) is set to a virtual drive that only is accessible when connected to the network at work. Manually changing that solves my problem. Sorry for the noise.
