Snap to random vertices after splitting features

What is the bug or the crash?

Since a few months it has happened to me relatively often that, after splitting many features (both lines or polygons), the Vertex Editor does not work properly. As I am about to move or add a new vertex, this "jumps" in another random (?) vertex, often not in the visible portion of map.
The issue does not affect all the vertices equally, but only specific ones. I could not make out if they had anything in common that justifies this behaviour.
By closing and reopening the project, the issue does not present itself at first, if not only to reappear after a while.
I do append a line shapefile, but it is not a problem of the file itself, it can happen with any of my shapefiles.

Steps to reproduce the issue

1. Open a line or polygon shapefile.
2. Split features.
3. Open the vertex editor and try to edit some vertices.
4. Some of them will present this behaviour.

I cannot reproduce on master, but given the small amount of info in the issue description it looks like a shot in the dark.
