Abstract

Qiskit is very much tailored to IBM superconducting devices currently.
Other backends are possible but don't have good support.
I propose starting to implement an ion-trap backend for Qiskit.

  • The simplest thing would be to build new gates (i.e. Molmer Sorenson gate)
  • Add some transpiler passes for rewriting in the new basis.
  • Explore whether there are any mapping challenges or whether mapping is trivial.
  • Add some simulation methods in BasicAer and Aer.

a Pull Request into Terra and Aer that allows building ion-trap experiments, optimizing them, and simulating them.
