Qiskit is very much tailored to IBM superconducting devices currently.
Other backends are possible but don't have good support.
I propose starting to implement an ion-trap backend for Qiskit.
The simplest thing would be to build new gates (i.e. Molmer Sorenson gate)
Add some transpiler passes for rewriting in the new basis.
Explore whether there are any mapping challenges or whether mapping is trivial.
