SpaceHeX: A Hyper-Modular Space Hardware Platform

SpaceHeX is an open-source, hyper-modular space hardware platform designed to simplify the development and assembly of space satellites, rovers, drones, and experimental computing systems. The platform provides a flexible, accessible, and efficient solution for engineers, researchers, hobbyists, and students interested in space technology and hardware development.

SpaceHeX Overview Image

Features

  • Modular and scalable design for various space applications
  • Simplified hardware prototyping and sensor development
  • Compact, portable micro-assemblies for easy deployment and maintenance
  • Demonstration unit for showcasing new space technologies and innovations
  • Ground truth "Iron bird" for configuring and testing production satellites

Getting Started

Prerequisites

To get started with SpaceHeX, ensure you have the following tools and equipment:

  • 3D printer for creating modular enclosures
  • Microcontrollers, sensors, and modules (refer to the Bill of Materials)
  • Mini breadboards and necessary wiring
  • Basic soldering equipment and materials

Assembly

  1. Clone this repository or download the contents as a ZIP file.
  2. Locate the 3D print-ready STL files and print the required modular enclosures.
  3. Follow the assembly instructions provided in the docs/assembly.md file.

Firmware and Microcontroller Setup

  1. Flash the appropriate firmware onto the microcontrollers using the provided firmware files and instructions in the docs/firmware.md file.
  2. Connect the wires on mini breadboards to the sensors and modules, following the guidelines in the docs/wiring.md file.
  3. Set up the microcontroller to communicate with the sensors using the provided code examples in the code folder.

Documentation

Detailed documentation for building, operating, and customizing SpaceHeX is available in the docs folder. This includes:

  • Assembly instructions
  • Firmware setup
  • Wiring guidelines
  • Operations manual
  • Secret admin menu usage

Contributing
