Nobody is using them, and there are better alternatives..... e.g. packrat.

We can also "emulate" them with a query that is based on a date, i.e. package version(s) at a given time. Then the release is just a special case.

well there's at least a potential use case for package releases in https://github.com/tylermorganwall/adjustedcranlogs

No, that's different. I mean this: https://github.com/metacran/crandb#-releasepkgsversion-packages-that-were-current-at-an-r-release

but it is also true that the rversions api could be merged into the crandb api
