Established geographic data platforms like QGIS and GeoServer have developed ways to encode styling, using SLD and QML files. Here are some examples:

Styles for the UK Ordnance Survey: https://github.com/OrdnanceSurvey/OSMM-Topography-Layer-stylesheets/tree/master/Schema%20version%209/Stylesheets

Has anyone thought about ways to use these in R?
