PHP 8.1 throws a Warning #326

I am not sure why, but after upgrading from PHP 7.4 to 8.1 every site visit results in a PHP Warning:

PHP Warning: Undefined array key "background_color" in wp-content/themes/independent-publisher/inc/customizer.php on line 563
