Not sure if anything can be done (or should be done) about it, but I noticed that if one tries to set .on-switch arg on $*ARGFILES, it misses the very first call of that attribute that's done by IO::CatHandle.new, since when you access $*ARGFILES to try to set that attribute, the CatHandle for it alreay gets .new'ed
