It would be awesome if package versions could be also specified in the packages section of templates. With the help of https://github.com/christophergandrud/repmis multiple packages can be installed in the same R environment.

Maybe adding this feature as optional with only suggest repmis?

@jeroenooms wrote a nice article related to this issue last summer: https://github.com/jeroenooms/r-dependency-versioning
I still don't see any real hacks on which we could rely on here (in the means of a package), so closing this issue for now.
