Audio encoded to ALAC format with alacit(1) is missing some metadata, notably gapless playback info. Apple uses the ID3v2 tag, iTunSMPB, for this purpose.

It appears that the ffmpeg(1) AAC encoder does not support gapless playback yet. Under OS X, one option is afconvert(1), described in Mastered for iTunes. Unfortunately, this involves several steps: FLAC => WAVE => CAFF => ALAC.
