I'm not an R person at all, but it has a pretty good user base at the company I work for in my day job. (Also, our "in-house R guru" is a close colleague.) I'll advertise the plugin and will ask for feedback there.

The R wrapper including the htmlwidgets wrapper around recogito-js has just been released to CRAN at: https://cran.r-project.org/package=recogito
It also includes annotorious to allow to annotate areas of interest in images. Details in the README at https://github.com/DIGI-VUB/recogito
